William Almon Wheeler (June 30, 1819 – June 4, 1887) was an American politician and attorney. Rutherford B. Hayes was born in Delaware, Ohio, in 1822 and earned degrees from Kenyon College and Harvard Law School before starting a career as a lawyer in Cincinnati. Hayes served as a major general in the Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War and was elected to the U.S. Congress in 1864. Hayes then was elected Governor of Ohio and later served one term as President of the United States (1877-1881) before retiring to his home in Fremont, Ohio, where he died in 1893.President of the Uni...
